Sony today confirmed that the next entry in their popular racing series, Gran Turismo, will launch on the PS3 at the end of this year. This is the racer’s sixth entry into the main series over the course of fifteen years. Read on for a concept trailer and some information revealed about the game.

Sony has announced Gran Turismo 6, a PS3 exclusive (but possibly moving to the PS4 later), launching at the end of this year. The company is promising a simpler, more user-friendly game than Gran Turismo 5 with less complexity. Also claimed is a new physics engine, game engine and tyre model. The developers have also incorporated adaptive tessalation, which allows differences in levels of detail (eg. on a model) to appear smooth and evenly transitioned.

The game will feature over twelve-hundred cards, with all the cars from Gran Turismo 5 returning (with two-hundred new additions). New customisation options, such as a higher number of aerodynamic parts and choices, will feature in the game. Additionally, the game will offer thirty-three locations and seventy-one track layouts.

“However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!” said Kazunori Yamauchi at the reveal event today.

Smartphones, tablets and possibly the PS Vita will also be able to interact with the game for further possibilities. The team has also hinted at a PS4 port later, however, at the moment, Drive Club will be PS4′s launch racer. Stick with us for more from the PS3, Gran Turismo and next-gen!
