Blizzard’s upcoming first-person shooter Overwatch is set to do well in sales as the open beta is downloaded by a massive 9.7 million gamers across the PC, PS4 and Xbox One breaking a new record for Blizzard’s most played open beta test.

To put this into perspective, Star Wars: Battlefront was played around 9.5 million players back before its release across the same three platforms. When you consider that Battlefront had the hype surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens to assist it, Overwatch is looking prime for taking the number one spot in the charts.

The co-founder and CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime said “We’re thrilled that such an incredible number of players from around the globe got a chance to check out Overwatch during the Open Beta. Our mission was to make sure as many console and PC gamers as possible could experience the full game ahead of its launch—the response was overwhelming, and we hope that everyone had a blast”.

We will know for sure once the game releases and we get to see the sales figures, however, it looks like Overwatch will continue to justify Blizzard’s decision to move into the console gaming market. Overwatch is available on May 24th on PS4, PC and Xbox One.
