Sony have announced that a new update for the Playstation 4 Media Player application has gone live which will add support for 360° video playback when using a Playstation VR.

In order to download the update, simply start the PS4 Media Player application on your Playstation 4 and you will then be prompted to download version 2.5 of the application. From the options menu of the Media Player application, you will then be able to select “VR Mode” if you have a Playstation VR connected.

All video file formats which the application supports (MKV, AVI, AVCHD, MPEG2 PS, MPEG2 TS, MP4) will also be supported for VR provided the media is recorded in an equirectangular format (by a 360° omnidirectional camera system. Images which are captured in the same way will also be supported in the JPG, BMP and PNG formats.

Sony have not yet commented on whether the Playstation 4 YouTube app will be updated to enable 360° YouTube Video playback.
