The kind people at Premier (on behalf of The Pokemon Company) sent us some review samples of the new Pokemon Black & White: Plasma Freeze theme decks and booster packs, which add-on to the popular, long-running Pokemon trading card game. We have both new theme decks here in the office for review, in addition to two sample booster packs to give you a great idea of what the new range is all about.

So, the two new theme decks are titled ‘Frost Ray’ and ‘Psy Crusher’ respectively. As you may have guessed, Frost Ray is based on water energy (ice cards) coupled with an electrical twist, while Psy Crusher is psychic coupled with grass. The front of the Frost Ray deck is given to a rare holo-foil Glaceon, while a rare holo-foil Leafeon adorns the front of the Psy Crusher deck. One of the nice things the Pokemon TCG has recently been doing is including a code to unlock an online equivalent of the product you just purchased free in TCG packs, and the decks and boosters in Plasma Freeze are no exception to the rule.

Upon opening the beautifully designed packaging, inside you will find the usual game mat and quick start guide, along with the deck in a very nice individual box (shaped like the box in which a deck of playing cards would be housed within), a nicely designed coin, the rare card respective to each deck and, as mentioned, the online redemption code. The deck within the box contains 60-core cards (plus the rare, making 61), which do not change between theme decks (they are fixed), so, I do suggest buying at least two boosters alongside the theme deck to really customise your deck, and, in particular, perhaps looking back at some previous releases which might tie in with the Plasma Freeze deck, to give the deck a bit more variation.

Psy Crusher and Frost Ray are both decks highly focused and Eevee and its evolutions. For example, in the Frost Ray deck, there are two Glaceon cards, two Vaporeon, two Jolteon and four basic Eevee. In terms of energy cards, there are nine of each of the two energy types in Frost Ray, while Psy Crusher has ten pyschic and eight grass. The holo-foil version of both Leafeon and Glaceon are respectively exclusive to each theme deck. Both of these theme decks are powerful, and have a great variety of cards which is nicely complemented by the booster packs. These decks are definitely a great place to start for new players, or players who may want to Eevee-ify or rejuvinate their existing decks. The decks are available at an RRP of £9.99 each and are randomly chosen in many retailers, but there are a few where you can choose which you would like.

The add-on boosters contain a huge range of cards, most being relevant to one theme deck or the other. Ten additional cards are offered with each booster at an RRP of £3.49, so, while they are at a bit of a premium, they definitely help customise your deck and give it a bit of extra variety. I would personally recommend two booster packs for each theme deck you purchase, however, three or more boosters can really help give a wider selection if you are willing to cough up for them. As with the theme decks, the boosters also contain a redemption code which will unlock an online booster pack – a nice added bonus.

So, to conclude, the new Plasma Freeze cards add a lot of freshness to the Pokemon TCG and are both a great place to start playing, and a great way to get a lot of Eevee into your existing decks. The decks are great value for what they offer at £9.99 and I would be surprised if you were disappointed with the purchase – I definitely recommend buying a theme deck and two boosters if you are a fan of the TCG or want to start playing!
